Ann Arbor City Council voted 9-0 Monday, Oct. 19, to convert Carey Street from two-way to one-way traffic near the Broadway bridges, according to MLive.
Once implemented, the change will eliminate southbound driving on Carey from Depot Street to Division Street. The street will carry only northbound traffic toward Depot Street, with on-street parking added. The city plans to extend the Division Street protected bikeway into the area in 2027, according to its project page.
Officials said eight property damage-only crashes occurred within 100 feet of the Carey and Division intersection in 2024 and 2025. Poor sight distances for drivers turning from Carey onto Division were a key concern.
Council Member Erica Briggs, D-5th Ward, said the city has weighed changes to the area since the 1990s, MLive reported.
"I was in college at that time. I am now a grandma," she said.
Traffic counts showed several dozen cars per hour on southbound Carey at peak times, according to MLive. Officials said the rerouting could add about one to two minutes to affected trips.
