Kerrytown Concert House will celebrate 30 years of avant-garde jazz when Edgefest returns to Ann Arbor for a four-day run Wednesday, Oct. 7, through Saturday, Oct. 10. The milestone festival anchors a packed October concert calendar that stretches across Hill Auditorium, The Ark, Nichols Arboretum and the Ann Arbor District Library, according to Pulp, the library's arts publication.

Edgefest 30: Freedom at the Edge

Founded in 1997 by Dave Lynch as a single-day event, Edgefest has grown into a four-day festival of improvised, composed and new music. Artistic Director Deanna Relyea oversees programming for this year's edition, themed "Freedom at the Edge," which features more than 40 performances split between Kerrytown Concert House and Community High School Auditorium.

Headliners include saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell, pianist Craig Taborn and drummer-vocalist William Hooker. Taborn, a University of Michigan alumnus and MacArthur Fellowship recipient, plays a solo piano set Saturday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m., Mitchell sits for a free public conversation at Community High School Auditorium. A free performance by the Creative Arts Orchestra, directed by Marcus Elliot and featuring Mitchell in a world premiere composition by Michael Malis, follows immediately.

Saturday's closing day begins with a noon parade through the Kerrytown area near the Ann Arbor Farmers Market. Community members are invited to join with instruments of all kinds.

Individual performance tickets cost $20, or $10 for students. Day passes run $70 to $100. A full Edgepass is $240, and premium passes with reserved seating range from $340 to $390. Tickets are available at the door or in advance at 734-769-2999.

Bruce Hornsby makes his UMS debut

Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers open the month at Hill Auditorium on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m. The show marks Hornsby's first appearance under the University Musical Society (UMS) banner.

The concert is part of his Indigo Park Tour, supporting a new album that features Bob Weir and Bonnie Raitt. The tour also marks the 40th anniversary of his 1986 debut album, The Way It Is, which sold three million copies. Hornsby won the Grammy for Best New Artist following the album’s release.

Samara Joy returns to Hill Auditorium

Six-time Grammy-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy performs with her septet at Hill Auditorium on Friday, Oct. 9. Joy sold out her 2024 UMS debut after winning the Grammy for Best New Artist.

In a Sept. 22 UMS feature on her musical influences, Joy said Carmen McRae "just kind of gets right to the heart of a song," naming the late vocalist as the singer she most closely patterns her style after. Tickets start at $30, with student tickets $15 to $20.
