Laurie McCauley, the University of Michigan’s provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, will not seek reappointment when her term ends June 30, 2027.

The university announced McCauley’s decision and a search for her successor Monday, Oct. 19, according to the University Record. President-elect C. Cybele Raver will launch the search after taking office Dec. 1, according to the university’s provost search page.

The provost is the Ann Arbor campus’s chief academic and budget officer, according to university bylaws.

McCauley has held the role since May 16, 2022. She was initially appointed to a 13-month term and reappointed by the Board of Regents in February 2023 to serve through June 30, 2027, the University Record stated.

McCauley is also the William K. and Mary Anne Najjar Professor of Periodontics and a professor of dentistry in the School of Dentistry, as well as a professor of pathology in the Medical School. She plans to return to those faculty roles.

“I am most proud of keeping that mission at the heart of my leadership and of the many initiatives we put in place to support faculty and staff in advancing it,” McCauley said, according to MLive. She was referring to the university’s research and education mission.

President Domenico Grasso said McCauley has guided U-M through a turbulent period for higher education. He expressed confidence that the search would bring another strong leader to the executive team as the university transitions to Raver’s presidency.

The university has partnered with Spencer Stuart, a national search firm, to assist with the process. Keisha Blevins, deputy chief of staff and senior human resources adviser in the Office of the President, will serve as the president’s liaison. Staff members JaLah Armstrong and Tjá Page will also support the search.

The university said the selection process will remain confidential and additional information about the search committee would be shared in the coming weeks.
