Ann Arbor art-pop group My Salamander releases its new album, "Places You'll Go," with a full album-release show at The Blind Pig on Thursday, Sept. 24.

The five-piece band features David Minnix, Paul Luckhoff, Nicole Knorr, Nelson Walker and Ancel Fitzgerald Neeley. Knorr met her bandmates while attending the University of Michigan, according to an interview by Lori Stratton published in Pulp, the Ann Arbor District Library's arts publication.

The album draws on the members' personal reflections and explores experiences of queerness and change, Pulp reported. Minnix, the band's vocalist-guitarist, described the writing process in an email interview with the publication.

"We were writing all together, in little pairs and trios, and on our own," Minnix wrote. "We brought all of it together and started to see a thread."

Each member brings a different instrument and perspective. Track No. 2, "Insects," grew from an unusual pairing between Luckhoff and Knorr. Luckhoff, also a vocalist-guitarist, wrote one verse about feeling overwhelmed by the pace of life and digital communication. He brought it to Knorr, the band's vocalist-pianist, who had the opposite problem: she couldn't slow down. She wrote the second verse, flipping the lyrics.

The result turns the song inside out.

The band blends indie and progressive rock. Pulp's full interview explores the group's influences, name origin and collaborative process in detail.

The Sept. 24 show at The Blind Pig, 208 South First St., also features Ann Arbor indie-rock band Toadally, Stephen Lubera and ?brightside. The show is 18 and older; those under 21 pay $5 extra at the door, according to the venue's event page.

My Salamander plans to play the full record front to back at the show.
