Michael Haikal scored his first goal as a Wolverine in the 87th minute, lifting Michigan men's soccer to a 2-1 win over Oakland on Tuesday, Sept. 29.
The Senior Night victory ended a four-match winless streak for the Wolverines. Haikal, a graduate midfielder limited by injury for most of the season, was making his first start as a Wolverine and had never played more than a half before the Sept. 29 match, the Michigan Daily reported.
Michigan coach Chaka Daley said after the game that his staff had been building up Haikal's fitness and decided to give him his first extended run in the opening half.
The opportunity paid off in the final minutes.
Michigan (3-3-2, 0-2-1 Big Ten) dominated possession, generating 14 shots and 11 corner kicks while holding Oakland (3-3-3) to three shots and just one on goal, according to Michigan Athletics.
The Michigan Daily reported that 28% of Michigan's possession came in the attacking third, compared with 12% for Oakland. But Michigan struggled to convert open chances into goals.
Senior forward Grayson Elmquist broke through in the 43rd minute, converting a penalty kick after Kian Concepcion was fouled in the box. It was Elmquist's fourth goal of the season and his second from the penalty spot.
The lead lasted about four minutes of match time. Oakland midfielder Grant Mateer equalized in the 47th minute, finishing off assists from Cal Kurzawa and Kinan Abdulrazzak to make it 1-1.
Michigan kept pressing. Graduate midfielder Nico Pendleton and senior midfielder Duilio Herrera drove transition chances through the middle, while senior defender Will Baker anchored the back line. The Michigan Daily reported that freshman defender Andrew Craig went down with an injury in the 29th minute and did not return.
Then came the 87th minute. A throw-in deep in Michigan's attacking third was deflected and landed in front of Haikal in the middle of the box. He lifted the ball above defenders and into the top-right corner of the net.
"I saw the big center back they have in the back approaching it, so I knew he was heading it to clear it … So I just stood in the right spot, got lucky, and just ripped it," Haikal told the Michigan Daily.
The drama was not over. According to the Michigan Daily, in the final seconds, Oakland appeared to score an equalizer, but officials ruled the play offside after a video review, preserving Michigan's win.
The program honored 11 seniors and graduate students in a pregame ceremony. The Wolverines had entered the match on a four-match winless stretch, including a 1-0 loss at Northwestern on Friday, Sept. 25.
Michigan hosts Portland on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium to close out its non-conference schedule.
