Michigan cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford said sophomore Shamari Earls is earning a starting role, prompting the Wolverines to consider a four-man cornerback rotation less than two weeks before the season opener.

"Shamari's playing like a starter, and honestly I'm probably going to have four of them," Gilford said at a Tuesday, Aug. 25, press conference, according to The Michigan Daily. He called Earls' development "night and day from day one on and off the field."

The rotation would pair Earls with graduate cornerback Zeke Berry, senior Jyaire Hill and senior Smith Snowden.

Those three veterans have a combined 72 college starts at the position.

Earls, a Thomas Dale High School product from Chester, Virginia, was ranked as the ninth-best cornerback in the 2024 recruiting class. But his freshman season told a different story. He appeared in six games without recording a stat beyond participation.

That changed this fall.

Gilford credited the veteran trio for accelerating Earls' development. The coach said Earls learned how to watch film, how to practice and how to be consistent every day by working alongside Berry, Hill and Snowden through spring and fall camp.

Nickel flexibility

Earls' emergence unlocks a secondary benefit. All three veteran corners have expressed interest in taking reps at the nickel position, and Gilford said he plans to let them rotate there.

Hill has never seen meaningful playing time at nickel while at Michigan but has been eager to take reps there throughout camp. All three veterans have expressed interest in splitting time between outside and inside roles.

Gilford described the versatility as a defensive advantage, noting that defensive coordinator Jay Hill told reporters the coaching staff plans to use Berry, Snowden and Hill interchangeably at nickel.

Snowden, a transfer from Utah, played through a core muscle injury during his 2025 season with the Utes, recording 37 tackles and 11 pass breakups, according to a Michigan Daily report on injury returnees. He had surgery in February and returned on a snap count during fall camp.

Season opener Sept. 5

Michigan opens the season against Western Michigan on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Michigan Stadium, according to the team's 2026 schedule. How Gilford and head coach Kyle Whittingham divide snaps among the four cornerbacks will be one of the first defensive storylines to watch.
