A motorcyclist from the Dexter area suffered life-threatening injuries Monday, Aug. 17, after his motorcycle collided with a smaller SUV on N. Zeeb Road in Scio Township, according to Scio Township Fire Chief Andrew Houde.
Houde told The Sun Times News that crews responded to the crash just north of Stonegate Road at 10:58 a.m. The rider, a man in his late 40s, was treated at the scene and rushed to University of Michigan Hospital.
"As of now he is still alive with very serious injuries," Houde told The Sun Times News Monday afternoon.
The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Houde said. The cause of the collision has not been released, and the investigation remains ongoing.
The driver of the SUV stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to Houde.
Road closed for four hours
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office issued an alert at 11:21 a.m. Monday directing drivers to avoid N. Zeeb Road between Pratt Road and Stonegate Road. The closure was lifted just before 3 p.m., roughly four hours after the crash was reported.
N. Zeeb Road connects Dexter-Ann Arbor Road and Jackson Road, serving as a key north-south route for commuters between Dexter and Ann Arbor's west side.
Second serious motorcycle crash this summer
The Scio Township crash marks at least the second serious motorcycle-versus-vehicle collision reported in Washtenaw County in less than two months. On June 29, 2026, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash involving a passenger vehicle in Manchester Township, according to the Michigan State Police First District.
Nationally, 6,228 motorcyclists died in U.S. traffic crashes in 2024, accounting for 16% of all traffic fatalities despite motorcycles making up a far smaller share of vehicle miles traveled, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data.
No update on the Scio Township rider's condition has been released since Monday afternoon. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office has not publicly released a crash report.
