Skyline's boys cross country team is ranked No. 1 in Michigan's Lower Peninsula Division 1 coaches poll. The girls sit at No. 2, with the Portage Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 10, up next.

The MichiganCrossCountry.com coaches poll released Monday, Oct. 5, puts the Skyline boys ahead of Jenison and Traverse City West. The Skyline girls trail city rival Pioneer, which won the 2025 LP Division 1 girls state championship. Northville, the four-time defending boys state champion, sits at No. 3 on the girls side and No. 13 on the boys side.

At the Lamplighter meet on Friday, Aug. 21, the Skyline boys won out of 32 teams, beating Northville. The girls placed fourth at the same meet.

Skyline kept rolling at Southeastern Conference Jamboree 1 on Tuesday, Sept. 15, taking first in boys varsity and girls JV, and second in girls varsity and boys JV. At the Jackson Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 26, the boys won with 78 points, 34 ahead of runner-up Springboro, according to The Sun Times News.

At SEC Jamboree 2 on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Willow Metropark, the girls finished second with 41 points behind Pioneer's 27, according to The Saline Post.

Senior captain Garrett Comer, a four-year member of the program, told The Skyline Post in a report published Wednesday, Oct. 7, that the state title is the target.

"Our main goal is to win the state meet since we're ranked highly right now," Comer said. "… If we just keep doing everything we've been doing, we're on a really good track."

The program trained through the summer with near-daily practices, including twice-weekly workouts and weekly long runs, according to JV athlete Gable MacArthur.

An incoming freshman class has reinforced both the JV and varsity rosters. JV athlete Alani Tharp said the depth runs through the entire program, with strong freshmen bolstering an already talented varsity group.

Beyond the state meet, the Eagles have their sights on Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) on Sunday, Nov. 15. A top-two finish in their championship race would send them to Nike Cross Nationals, according to the event’s qualification rules.

The Portage Invitational takes place at Portage West Middle School. The Division 1 boys race starts at 1 p.m. and the girls race at 2 p.m. The MHSAA LP Division 1 Finals follow on Saturday, Nov. 7.
