Michigan State Police have identified the Ann Arbor woman killed Aug. 2 on westbound M-14 near Wagner Road as Nora Peña Argueta, 45.

Her funeral was held Sunday, Aug. 9.

Lt. Rene Gonzalez of Michigan State Police confirmed Peña Argueta's identity to MLive. State police have submitted their investigative report to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor's Office for review of possible charges against the 32-year-old Ann Arbor woman who drove Peña Argueta that night, including operating while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic crash, according to the Sun Times News. No formal charges had been filed as of Sunday, Aug. 9.

As we reported Aug. 7, Peña Argueta was a passenger in a Ford Explorer driven by the 32-year-old woman, described by police as her friend. The pair had left a restaurant where both consumed alcohol, police said. During the drive home on M-14, the two argued, and Peña Argueta demanded to be let out, opening the door while the vehicle was still moving.

The driver pulled onto the right shoulder. Peña Argueta exited and ran into the westbound lanes, where she was struck by a Jeep Compass driven by a 45-year-old Ann Arbor man at approximately 11 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep driver stopped, initially believing he had hit a deer; he was uninjured and not impaired, police said.

The Explorer driver checked on Peña Argueta, saw that she had died, then left the scene. She later told investigators she "panicked," according to state police.

Peña Argueta's 18-year-old son, Hainstone Hurlston Peña, told MLive in an Aug. 6 interview that his mother immigrated from Honduras several years ago to escape domestic violence. She worked in housekeeping and retail but dreamed of becoming a lawyer and spent her time connecting victims of sexual abuse with attorneys and donating to shelters.

"Her dream was always to advocate for other people," Hurlston Peña told MLive.

Hurlston Peña had planned to start college this fall to pursue a law career specializing in litigation for physical and sexual abuse of women. He said those plans are now delayed as he and his 19-year-old brother work to cover bills and funeral costs. A GoFundMe campaign had raised nearly $5,000 as of Friday, Aug. 7.

Peña Argueta is survived by three adult sons. Her oldest lives overseas; Hurlston Peña and his brother are in Ann Arbor.
