A fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to Tomukun Noodle Bar in downtown Ann Arbor early Saturday, Oct. 3. Two neighboring businesses in the same East Liberty Street building also closed after smoke and water spread during the firefighting effort.
The Ann Arbor Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire at 505 E. Liberty St. at 2:52 a.m., according to the department's official Facebook post. Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the roof of the noodle bar. When crews reached the roof, they discovered the fire was burning through the kitchen hood exhaust system.
The blaze appears to have originated from a trash can inside the restaurant's kitchen, the fire department said. Crews deployed hose lines and suppressed the fire before it could spread structurally beyond Tomukun Noodle Bar.
The department estimated it saved $1.75 million in building and contents, according to MLive.
Smoke and water from the response spread to two adjacent businesses sharing the building: Lab Cafe and Tomukun Korean BBQ. Both were closed pending evaluation by the Washtenaw County Health Department.
Tomukun Korean BBQ reopened Sunday, Oct. 4, according to The Michigan Daily. Tomukun Noodle Bar and Lab Cafe remained closed as of that date with no announced reopening timeline. The noodle bar's front door was boarded up with a sign from BELFOR Property Restoration, the Daily reported.
Tomukun Noodle Bar opened in 2010 at the East Liberty Street location, between Thompson and Maynard streets, serving dishes inspired by Korean and Southeast Asian home cooking. Tomukun Korean BBQ expanded next door in 2014. The noodle bar had been open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. before the fire.
No reopening date for Tomukun Noodle Bar or Lab Cafe has been announced, and the Washtenaw County Health Department has not set a public timeline for its inspections of the two businesses.
